Who is your hero? Some may say a parent. Some may say a movie star. Some may say an athlete. For many adults today who grew up in the 1970s and 1980s, chances are Walter Payton was their hero.
Walter Payton was born on July 25, 1954. He was born in Mississippi. He was one of three children in his family. Growing up, he liked to play in the woods. He liked to fish and explore. It was important to his mother that her children stay out of trouble. Each summer she had a huge load of soil delivered. It was Walter's job to move the soil throughout the yard. He could only move it little by little. His brother helped. That project kept them busy for most of the summer.
Walter was a Boy Scout. He was involved with his church. He also played in the band. He sang in the choir. Walter then discovered football. Walter was a fast runner. He was strong. Walter became a star running back.
