Have you ever seen a lightning bug? Lightning bugs are one of my favorite things about summer. I love looking out across a field and watching these bugs flicker and flash. Some people call these neat little insects fireflies. But these creatures aren't really "flies" at all. They are actually beetles. The light is made by chemicals in the insects' abdomens. The light may be yellow, green, blueish, or pale red in color. Why do these beetles glow? Is it so they can see in the dark? No, it's actually the way they find a mate.
