Marigold was a teddy bear, a very small teddy bear. The toy had been purchased for Sue from the hospital gift shop. Sue's arm had been broken. Now it was covered with a hard, white cast.
Sue loved Marigold right away. The soft golden-brown fur was the same color as her own hair. The tiny bear was small enough to tuck into her sling. That is where Sue carried her.
As they came home from the hospital, Marigold was tucked there, safe and sound. The bright spring day was reflected in the bear's tiny, glass eyes as they drove home.
That night, the bear slept close to Sue. Marigold's fuzzy head was tucked under the girl's chin.
The days began to get longer. One day, Sue came home without her cast.
"Look, Marigold!" said Sue. "My arm is all better now." She swung her arm around and bent it to show how it could move.
"Ow!" she said. "It's been so long since I could really use it, it hurts. Oh well, it will soon be normal again."
On the first day of summer vacation, Sue and Marigold had a tea party in the shady corner of the backyard. The tall maple trees had so many leaves that they blocked all the sun from the ground. It was cool there, even on the hottest days.
Sometimes, Sue's friend Anna came over to visit. She lived two doors down. She had a stuffed dog she brought to their tea parties. While the two girls talked and laughed, the toys sat in silence.
