Staying Close to Home for Vacation

Planning a vacation is fun! You pack your clothes. You pack your games. You plan your activities. Your parents plan, too. They plan a budget. That means they decide how much money they will spend. One part of a vacation budget can go up a lot: the price of gasoline.

Sometimes gas prices are low. Other times gas prices are high. When gas prices are high, taking a vacation can be a lot more expensive. This causes some families to choose to stay closer to home on their vacations. Many kinds of transportation use gas-powered engines. Car engines use gas. Airplane engines use gas, too.

Nikolaus Otto invented the engine that is used today in many vehicles. It is called the internal combustion engine. He invented it in the nineteenth century. Years later, his engine design was adapted and used to power the first gasoline powered automobiles.
