Whether or not you are a poet (and whether or not you know it), you can write a sonnet. A sonneteer (one who writes sonnets, naturally) follows certain rules. If you do that, in fourteen lines you'll have a sonnet to call your own!
The rules of sonnetry are as follows:
1. Write each line in iambic pentameter.
2. Follow your chosen rhyme scheme.
3. Do this for fourteen lines.
4. End with a surprise twist (volta).
You can choose to write either an Italian sonnet or an English sonnet. Both sonnets are made up of fourteen lines of iambic pentameter. The differences lie in the rhyme scheme and the length of the stanzas.
