Cyndi opened the back of the two-horse trailer and slipped in beside the gray animal standing there. Hay and other items were stored in the other side.
"How are you doing there, Cricket?" Cyndi asked the horse as she moved alongside of him.
The horse turned his head to look for her and shifted his body to one side. She patted his sides, giving him clues to her location.
Once at the front of the trailer, she rubbed the gelding's neck and then put his bridle on. He had traveled wearing his saddle and was quickly ready to back out of the trailer.
"Is Cricket ready to go?" asked Dad as he came around the side of the trailer. His feet crunched the heavy layer of refrozen snow.
"Yes, Dad," said Cyndi, "but isn't there some way I could ride Cricket today or even try my hand at the tow rope?"
Dad looked down at his much shorter daughter.
"You know, I believe we discussed that before leaving home. You are still too young to ride or go skijoring in the race," he said. "I don't want to hear any more about it. Okay?"
Cyndi nodded her head. It didn't seem fair to her that Donny got to have all the fun.
