Reading Comprehension for October 2
Larry got out of the car. He loved looking after Uncle Jake's farm animals when Uncle Jake and his family went on vacation. Dad called it farm sitting. Behind the old farmhouse was the big barn where the large black Angus cows waited for their hay. To the left was the long henhouse where Aunt Ida kept her laying hens.
The sun was bright in the sky, and as Larry and his dad walked toward the large wooden barn, they could hear the cattle bawling near the back of the building. Larry could smell them, too. He hoped he wouldn't have to go down where the cows were. He would be sure to step in a cow pie.
"Sounds like they are all inside to get out of the sun," said Larry.
Dad pointed up to the haymow in the barn loft and gestured for Larry to climb up. "There hasn't been much rain lately, and the pasture isn't enough to feed them. Toss down several bales. We don't want them losing weight. I will go and start getting the pig feed ready."
