Shenandoah National Park
You will find a national park close to Washington, DC. It is just 75 miles away. Many presidents have come here for short vacations during the summer. Its location in Virginia made this park a quick getaway. People used to live within the borders of this park. It is in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Some of the Appalachian Trail is in this park. The park's name is Shenandoah National Park.
The park has an interesting history. In 1929 a president bought land here. It was President Herbert Hoover and his wife, Lou Henry Hoover. They were looking for a place where they could come during the summer. They needed to be close to Washington, DC. They bought land along the Rapidan River. The Hoovers paid for the land and supplies to build the buildings. The Marines built the camp. Everyone loved the camp because it was so relaxing. Eventually, the Hoovers donated the camp to the government. Other presidents that came after Hoover also used this camp as a vacation spot. Today, this camp is part of a national park.
