Author Sean Stewart began his career writing books. During his writing career, however, Stewart took an alternate route when he became involved in web interactive games, or alternate reality games. Stewart has ingeniously united writing and technology to create games that allow readers to be involved in the stories.
Stewart was born on June 2, 1965, in Lubbock, Texas, but moved to Alberta, Canada, in 1968. He is an only child who describes his childhood as relatively unremarkable. When Stewart was seven, he received The Hobbit as a birthday gift. According to Stewart, "Within a year I was reading in bulk, leaning toward books featuring adventures with swords." As a young child, he realized he wanted to be a writer when he grew up. The thought never really left Stewart's mind.
Playing with swords was exciting for Stewart. He participated in fencing and, at the age of eleven, won the Alberta Boys Under 12 Provincial Championship in foil. The épée was his best weapon, which he learned his first year in high school. Things changed, however, during Stewart's second year in high school. In an interview he stated that "...the new coach did not teach épée, ran class like a Bulgarian military academy, and anyway I found myself more interested in girls than weapons."
