Screech for a Skink

Reptile Day

Reading Comprehension for October 21

A screech echoed across the front steps and into the house. Dad rushed out the door to where Halley stood, shaking in fear.

"What's wrong?" he asked.

"I just saw a lizard!" she exclaimed and hid her face against Dad's shirt. "I don't like them. They are so creepy!"

Dad tried not to smile at her response. He put his arm around her to give some comfort.

"Let's sit here for a few minutes," he said, and patted the step next to him as he sat. Halley reluctantly sat down next to him. "So what is so awful about our skinks?" he asked her.

"They are so creepy and slimy, just like worms!" said Halley.

"Well, actually," said Dad, "they are nothing like worms. They are not slimy and have smooth, scaly skin. It shines in the sun because it's so clean and dry."

"They are awful things!" said Halley.

"How do you know they are awful?" asked Dad. "I think they are wonderful little animals."
