Marie sat on the leather couch with her arms crossed and a look of disappointment on her face. "I don't understand why we can't go to Disney World like everyone else," she muttered under her breath.
Just then, Mom walked into the room. "What did you say?" she asked, looking at Marie.
"Oh, nothing," Marie lied.
"Come on, Marie," her mom prompted. "Don't be coy with me. I heard you say something."
Marie sighed. She could never lie to her mom for long. That was a good thing! Deep down, Marie wanted to be an honest person and have integrity. She slipped this time because she was embarrassed about what she was feeling and thinking. However, she decided to confess and admit her feelings.
"I'm disappointed that we can't go to Disney World for winter break," she said.
Mom sat on the couch and slid over to Marie, putting her arm around Marie's shoulders. "So am I, dear."
"All my friends are going. Some are even going to go on the Disney cruise. I was hoping to see some of them while we were on vacation. It would be exciting to see them at Disney World instead of just here in our neighborhood or at school. It's not fair."
Mom sat silently. Things had been tough since Marie's dad had unexpectedly lost his job a few months ago. He was trying hard to find another job, but right now, they were relying on savings. It was not wise to spend money on a winter trip this year. Mom had felt disappointment too, so she understood how Marie was feeling. However, as she worked through her own attitude, she wanted to also help Marie. It would be a good life lesson for her to learn to be content in her circumstances and not compare herself with others.
