You have put it off long enough. Now it's time to tackle that twenty-page chapter you have been assigned to read in your science textbook. You know you will plow through it. But will you remember anything when you have to take the quiz tomorrow? Will you get a good grade on the test next week? You will if you use a method called SQ3(4)R.
SQ3(4)R is a study method that has been used for years. It is a system for tackling a textbook assignment. The letters stand for words. Better yet, they stand for actions you should take to help you understand and remember what you have read.
The "S" stands for "survey." Survey the assignment before you begin. Look at the title. What do you think the chapter will be about? Try to guess what will be included. Think about all the things you already know about this topic.
In the survey step, you must also try to figure out how the chapter is organized. Read over headings and subheadings. Notice words in italics or boldface type. These will most likely be the main ideas of the reading assignment. Next, read the introduction and summary. The main ideas will also be stated in these paragraphs.
Take a quick look at any pictures, charts, and graphs. Quickly skim any explanations that come with them. This will help you to determine which ones are most important to review as you read the selection.
