Rosa's Run-in
Even as a young girl, Rosa Parks always had a strong idea about what was right and what was wrong. She wanted everyone to be treated fairly, and sometimes that got her into trouble! Once, when she was ten, Rosa ran into a young white boy in town. His name was Franklin. Franklin made a snide comment to Rosa. Then he made a fist and threatened to hit her! Rosa would not stand for that. She grabbed a brick and threatened to hit him back! If he was going to attack her, then she was going to defend herself. When Rosa got home, she told her grandma about her run-in with Franklin. Rosa's grandmother was angry -- but not at Franklin. She was mad at Rosa! She told Rosa that society had given white folks special privileges. Even when they acted poorly, Rosa was not allowed to retaliate. This made Rosa furious. She felt that it was her right to defend herself against anyone who was threatening her, no matter what color skin the person had. Later in life, Rosa realized that her grandmother had not really been angry with her, but rather fearful for her. .....
