Reading Comprehension for November 4
"Are you ready, Susan?" asked Mom.
"Yes, ma'am!" said Susan.
"Good! Then go and get your science book. I will get the supplies," said Mom.
Susan had been looking forward to this all week. She and her mom were going to make rock candy. Susan had learned about it in science class, and she wanted to try doing it too. She walked into the kitchen with her science book in her hand. Mom was already there, putting a big pot on the stove. She had Susan pour in six cups of sugar and two cups of water.
"What are we doing, Mom?" asked Susan.
"We are putting in the ingredients for the rock candy." Then she turned on the stove. "And now I'm heating them up. We need to let this get really hot until it starts to boil. When that is done, we will pour it in a jar."
Susan looked at the pot, trying to imagine the pot getting hot. She could imagine seeing lots and lots of steam coming off of it. The old saying, "A watched pot never boils" suddenly made sense.
They waited for what seemed like a long time until the pot got really hot. Then Mom gave her a wooden spoon to stir the ingredients. In just a few minutes, the mixture was beginning to boil and was completely clear.
Mom turned off the stove and waited for it to cool. Then they added ten drops of red food coloring and ten drops of cherry flavoring. Once that was done, they carefully emptied the liquid into a glass jar. Susan thought it looked like red water now.
"Now what do we do, Mom?" asked Susan.
