Robert Kimmel Smith is the author of many great children's books. His books are heartwarming and funny. Oftentimes they also contain a moral message. Mr. Smith strives to write books that will teach children something.
Mr. Smith was born in Brooklyn, New York, on July 31, 1930. When he was eight years old he got very sick. He spent three months in bed. During that time he did a lot of reading. Many books that he read inspired him. While he was stuck in that bed, Robert decided that he wanted to be a writer when he grew up.
In school, Robert was an average student. His best subject was always writing. After high school, Mr. Smith attended one year of college. Then he joined the U.S. Army. He served in the Army from 1951-1953. In 1954 he married Claire Medney. They were married for forty-four years before Claire passed away. Together the couple had two children, a daughter and a son. It was their daughter, Heidi, who actually (and accidentally!) helped Mr. Smith finally become a writer. One evening while Heidi was getting ready to go to bed, Robert began to tell her a bedtime story. It was a good one! It was so good, in fact, that it became Mr. Smith's first book! That bedtime story was Chocolate Fever.
