Richard Nixon: A Hard Worker
Richard M. Nixon was the 37th president of the United States. He was born in Yorba Linda, California, on January 9, 1913. He was born into hard times. His family didn't have a lot. Richard spent much of his childhood struggling. His hard childhood would have big effects. It helped him sometimes. It also hurt him.
Nixon had four brothers. His brother Arthur died after a short illness at the age of seven. His older brother Harold died in 1933. He died of tuberculosis. The family had a history of tuberculosis. Nixon was thought to have the disease, too. At first, he wasn't allowed to play sports. Later, though, he played football.
In school, Nixon was good at debating. He worked very hard on his speeches. He won many championships. He was very good at speaking. He also worked while he was a student. He got up at four o'clock each morning. He took fruits and vegetables to his family's market. He did all this before school.
