Redwood National and State Parks
Giant coast redwood trees live along the Pacific coast in California. A park system protects some of these trees. The name of the combined parks is Redwood National and State Parks. It is in northern California, just south of the border with Oregon. The park is a narrow area where sea meets the land. The park protects an ancient coast redwood ecosystem.
Coast redwoods are the world's tallest tree. Many are more than 300 feet tall! There are many reasons why the trees grow so tall. The coast gets lots of rain. Fog also brings moisture. The temperature stays warm all year. It doesn't get very hot or very cold. The soil is rich. Redwoods have few natural enemies. The redwoods protect each other from strong winds. Some coast redwoods live to be 2,000 years old. Most live between 500 and 700 years.
