Rachel Interviews Jimmy the Yellowjacket
"Good morning, boys and girls. I'm Rachel Scott, the host of Bugs Beyond Belief. Here with us today is a very special, and sometimes dangerous, guest. I certainly hope I don't make him mad. His name is Jimmy, and he's a yellowjacket. Hello, Jimmy."
"Hi, Rachel. Don't worry about the stinging thing. I've got to be really mad or really scared to sting."
"So, you're a bee, right?"
"Actually, Rachel, I'm a wasp, but lots of people make the mistake of calling me a bee. I get my name from my color. I've got black-and-yellow stripes all around my body. I've even got yellow spots on my face. I think the yellow looks pretty good."
"Sure does, Jimmy. So, tell me a little about what you do."
"For starters, I live in a nest with thousands of other yellowjackets. It can get really crowded, but we've learned to live with it."
"That must be some nest, Jimmy."
"The workers of our nest chew up wood fiber into a kind of thick paper that we use to make our nest. We build our nests under trees, in the ground, and in other protected areas, like under the roofs of human houses."
"You mentioned workers. Are there different kinds of yellowjackets?"
