Rachel Carson, Founder of the Environmental Movement

When you see a problem, what do you do about it? Do you tell someone? Do you try to fix it yourself? When Rachel Carson saw a problem, she wrote books to tell people about it. Rachel learned that people were hurting nature. They were using pesticides to kill insects. Rachel learned that these chemicals could hurt other animals and plants, too.

Rachel was born on May 27, 1907. She always loved nature. When she was a child, she and her mother spent many happy hours outdoors discovering the world. After she was a grown-up, she wanted to protect the natural world.

Rachel took four years to write her book, Silent Spring. She called it Silent Spring because if the birds were killed, their songs would not be heard in the springtime. Her book told people that pesticides hurt living things. She said that people should be careful how they used pesticides.
