Rachel Carson, Environmentalist

When you see a problem, what do you do about it? Do you tell someone? When Rachel Carson saw a problem, she wrote a book. She wanted to tell people about the problem. Rachel learned that people were hurting nature. They were using poisons to kill insects. Rachel learned that these poisons could hurt other animals and plants, too.

Rachel was born on May 27, 1907. She always loved nature. When she was a child, she and her mother spent many happy hours outdoors discovering the world. After she was a grown-up, she wanted to protect the natural world.

Rachel took four years to write her book, Silent Spring. If the birds were killed, the springtime would be silent without bird songs. Her book told people that these poisons hurt living things. She said that people should be careful how they used them.
