"No talking during the movie."
That message is shown before a movie starts. In the early 1920s, people talked during movies. They talked about the movie. The movies did not have sound. There were captions. Captions were words on the screen. They told what the actors were saying.
Movies without sound were called silent movies. In 1926, sound was added. Music was played. Sound effects were used. The sounds were put on a record made of wax. The record was played during the movie.
