Porric the Penguin

Penguin Day

Reading Comprehension for April 29

Porric was a penguin. He was not just any penguin. He was a green, china penguin. Where a real penguin is black, he was green. He lived on the end of a book shelf, next to the window.

He stood very still. He liked to watch the people go by outside. Porric liked Saturday mornings. That was the time Ann would come and wipe any dust off. He liked to shine in the sun.

Ann had many penguins. They all stood side by side on the shelf. Some were very life-like. None of them looked like Porric.

Some of the other penguins cackled at him. They would wait until the house was still. They would sometimes laugh or make jokes about him. Porric said nothing. He had no mouth. Not even a line to show where his beak might open.

It had bothered Porric at first, but he learned to think instead. He did not listen. He just dreamed of being real.

Ann left her bedroom window open. She had dusted her room, but had forgotten to close the window. Then a wind began to blow.

At first, the curtain just moved a little. Soon it moved more. Before long, it began to really flap in the wind. Many times it moved close to where Porric sat on the end of the shelf.

Suddenly, the curtain seemed to wrap around him like a hand. It pulled him off the shelf. Down, down, down he fell. Then he bounced on the carpet and rolled under the bed.
