Plant Clones

Many science fiction movies are based on the idea of making clones of something. Jurassic Park and The Lost World had dinosaurs cloned from DNA. Many other sci-fi movies deal with human clones. But clones don't just exist in science fiction. Nature has made clones for millions of years. Most flowering plants reproduce by making seeds, but many plants make clones of themselves.

Strawberry plants make seeds. You can see them on the outside of the strawberry. But they also put out "runners." A runner is a new stem of the plant. The runner grows roots, and a new strawberry plant starts to grow. The new plant is a clone of the parent plant. It has exactly the same genes and the same genetic traits. Some types of grasses put out runners and reproduce the same way.
