Pepper at the Park

Mutt's Day

Reading Comprehension for July 31

Pepper stood at the edge of the park. Dogs were all over the place! Big dogs, little dogs, fat dogs, thin dogs, fancy dogs, and ugly dogs ran in all directions. The dogs barked. The dogs fetched. They even rolled over and played dead.

Pepper's tail wagged. His round black eyes sparkled. His pink tongue hung out of his mouth as he panted. He had waited a long time for Dog Day at the park!

He bounded across the green grass. The lingering dew made his paws wet, but he did not care. He had to join the fun! He planned to romp and play all day!

A silky Afghan hound was strutting along with her nose in the air. Pepper stopped to look. She looked like a movie star!

Pepper opened his mouth. Before he could speak, a pug the color of a biscuit stopped him.

"Don't bother," the pug said. "She doesn't talk to mutts."

Pepper frowned. He looked at the pug's black wrinkled face. For all its ugliness, the dog looked friendly.

"My name is Shadow," the pug said. "What's yours?"

"I'm Pepper, and who says that I'm a mutt?" Pepper really didn't like to be called a mutt.
