Ketchup is found all over the world. People like ketchup on hot dogs. They like it on hamburgers. French fries are dipped in it. Some people like it on eggs. Others put it on macaroni and cheese. Many people believe that food tastes better with ketchup.


Henry John Heinz knew that ketchup would be a hit. Henry was born on October 11, 1844. He was born in Pennsylvania. His parents had moved to the U.S. They once lived in Germany. Germany is a country in Europe. They made their home near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.


When Henry was six years old, he helped his mother in the garden. He enjoyed the work. Two years later, he started selling the vegetables. He went from door to door. When he was nine, he made his own horseradish. Horseradish is a root. Henry would grind up the root. He put it in bottles. It has a strong smell. It is used for cooking. It is used in sauces.
