On the night before school starts it's quiet in the long halls.
There are "Welcome Back" posters nicely hung on the walls.
The schoolyard is empty. Not a child can be seen.
The doors have been painted, and the windows are clean.
Children went to bed early. Now they're snug in their beds
while dreams about spelling tests dance in their heads.
As the janitor sweeps the last dust off the floor,
he heaves a big sigh. He has done this before.
Children's names have been taped above their coat hooks.
The library is stocked with shelves of new books.
The library cat's sleeping, and the books are arranged.
Nothing looks different, but something has changed.
All the bulletin boards have been freshly redone,
and the playground equipment is ready for fun.
