Oliver wanted to be a fire pup. He wanted it more than anything in the world. He thought about being a fire pup every day.
"Oliver, you are just a puppy," his father said. His father was a big spotted Dalmatian. He had been a fire dog for a long time. He was very brave. He rode on the fire truck with the firefighters.
"But, Dad, I want to be a fire pup right now," Oliver said. "I want to help the firefighters, too. I can help them tell the boys and girls about fire safety. I know all about fire safety!"
"If you really want to be a fire pup, you have a lot to learn," his father said. "Come to the fire station with me. You can watch the firefighters. You can listen to them talk. When you are old enough, maybe you can be a fire pup."
Oliver wanted to be a fire pup so much. He could just see the hat and the coat he would wear. He just knew he would be a good fire pup. But he would do what his father told him. He would try to learn as much as he could.
Oliver went to the fire station every day. He tried very hard to watch what the firefighters did. He listened to everything they said. He learned many things about fire safety.
Oliver learned that it is dangerous to play with things that could start a fire.
Oliver learned how to check a smoke alarm. He learned why we need smoke alarms in houses.
