Not Always a Vacation
"It must be wonderful to work on a cruise ship," Cassandra said to Marie as they sunned on the deck of the Pacific Jewel. Cassandra and Marie were enjoying a cruise trip with their families, celebrating their graduation from high school.
"I'm not so sure," Marie answered as she sipped her fruit smoothie.
"Why do you say that?" Cassandra said.
"One of my father's cousins works for a cruise line," Marie said. "I remember that during a family reunion some time ago, Carlos told us about his job."
"What did he say?" Cassandra asked, straightening the towel that she had rolled and put under her neck.
Marie turned in her lounge chair to better face Cassandra.
"Carlos said it's a lot of hard work, but he does get to see many interesting places."
Cassandra took a sip of her ginger ale. "What job does he have on the ship?"
"Carlos is a yeoman purser, which means that he assists the crew and passengers with many different needs, including doing paperwork, caring for valuables, helping them find their way around - just about anything they need."
Marie continued. "Carlos said his job is interesting because he never knows what type of help will be needed. Sometimes passengers want information about the ports they are visiting, and sometimes they need to mail something home. Sometimes they have forgotten an important item, or they need to store something valuable in the safe. Carlos helps with all that and more."
