Mr. Spud

Who am I? I am a toy. I am made of plastic. I am brown. I have many parts. My parts are body parts. I also come with shoes and a hat. I am Mr. Potato Head.

Mr. Potato Head was "born" in the 1940s. He was invented by George Lerner. The first Mr. Potato Head was just parts. The parts were stuck into real potatoes. Then, George tried to sell the parts. He tried to sell them to a cereal company. The parts were put into the cereal boxes. They were prizes for children. They were not popular.

George sold his invention to a toy company. Hasbro liked George's idea. They added their own ideas. Hasbro added more parts. Hats were added. Glasses were added. On April 30, 1952, Mr. Potato Head was the first toy to be sold on TV. A commercial was made. Many toys were sold. Mr. Potato Head became one of the most popular toys for children.
