Moving Day for Monica
"I may as well be moving to Mars!" cried Monica. Sixth-grader Monica was moving from New York to Missoula, Montana. Her father had been reassigned to open a new store in Missoula. The day after he accepted the job he broke the news to his family. Monica took a deep breath and then began sobbing. Her younger brother, Max, seemed excited.
Max asked his father if they were going to live on a horse ranch. Monica, on the other hand, was miserable. Monica asked her parents if she could stay in New York and live with her aunt and uncle. She did not want to leave her school, her friends, and her neighborhood. Her father said he understood how she felt. He said he knew it was going to be hard on all of them, but it was an opportunity for him to open his own store. He said he had given it a lot of thought before he had accepted the job.
"And you may as well know that our house is going up for sale next month. I've made arrangements for everyone to go with me to Montana next week to help us find a house," said her father.
Max said, "Whoopee!"
Monica said, "No way!" Monica moped around for several days. She was upset about everything. She had so many questions: What was Montana like? Were they going to live in a log cabin? Isn't everything in Montana in the wilderness? What kinds of schools are in Montana? Would she ever make new friends? Would she have her own room again? Was there anything to do in Montana besides go fishing?
