More Than Just a Chip off the Old Block
All of the soil in your backyard did not magically appear one night while you were sleeping. While soil is always being created, the process is a very slow one. It can take 1,000 years to form just one inch of soil! Soil does not have parents, but it is created from parent material. Parent material begins as rock. Often, the parent material is sediment that has been moved by wind, rain, or other forces. The breaking down of rocks, often brought about by weather, creates soil. We call this process "weathering."
