"What are you doing, Daddy?" Karla said as she yawned and rubbed her eyes. Her dad was holding Karla's teddy bear.
"Good morning, pumpkin," Daddy (known to others as Bill Frazee) said. "I'm getting ready to leave for work."
"Why are you holding Monte?" Karla asked. (Monte was the name she had given her teddy bear a long time ago. She had heard the name "Monte Carlo" while watching a special program on TV one day with her bear cuddled on her lap. She liked the name, so that's what she's called the bear ever since!)
"I wanted to ask you if I could take Monte to work today."
Karla was really awake now. "YOU want to take my teddy bear to work?"
Dad grinned. "Yes, dear. We are doing something fun, called 'Bring Your Teddy Bear to Work Day.' I used to have a teddy bear as a boy, but I don't know where he ended up. So, can I take yours?"
Karla thought about that for a moment. While she didn't want to disappoint her dad, she really liked having Monte with her, especially while she watched her favorite cartoon after breakfast. She looked up at her father. He was smiling at her and holding Monte so carefully, so she decided to say yes.
"Take good care of him, Daddy, okay?"
"I sure will, precious. Now come on, it's time for you to get up."
