Riding in our imaginary spacecraft, we are arriving on Mars. What do you think we will see on Mars? Do you think we will find little green men? Do you think we might see some plants? Will there be any life at all on Mars?
Mars is the only planet whose surface can be seen in detail from the Earth. It looks red because of the iron in the soil. It is the fourth-closest planet to the Sun. Mercury is the only planet smaller than Mars.
Mars is rocky. It has canyons, volcanoes, and craters all over its surface. Red dust covers most of the planet. Mars has clouds and wind, just like Earth. Sometimes the wind causes a dust storm. The dust storms can look like red tornados. Some people have nicknamed Mars the "Red Planet."
