Mammoth Cave National Park

Mammoth Cave is in Kentucky. It is the world's longest cave system. The word mammoth means very large. More than 348 miles of the cave have been explored. The cave is probably much longer than this. Visitors have toured the cave since 1810. It became a national park in 1941.


Geologists think the oldest part of the cave might be 10 million years old. There are fossils in Mammoth Cave. Interesting formations hang from the ceiling or come up from the floor. Stalactites grow down from the ceiling of the cave. Stalagmites rise from the floor of the cave.
