Malnutrition
Caption: This child is suffering from malnutrition and shows symptoms of the disease nutritional rickets. He has bowed legs and an enlarged right wrist. Nutritional rickets is a condition in which children's bones are too soft and do not develop properly due to a deficiency of vitamin D.
Augustine lived in a third-world country. He rarely had enough to eat. The drought in his nation made regular meals impossible. Augustine suffered from malnutrition.
Teresa was lactose intolerant. She avoided milk and dairy products because they made her feel ill. She wasn't taking enough calcium into her body. As a result, she suffered from malnutrition.
Philip was a young accountant. He ate plenty of junk food but not much that was good for his body. As a result, Philip was suffering from malnutrition.
How can three such different people suffer from malnutrition? Malnutrition is a health condition in which the individual is not getting adequate nutrients. The condition can occur because the person's diet is lacking a particular vitamin or because the person is not getting enough food. Malnutrition can be caused by a lack of food, an unbalanced diet, trouble with digestion or absorption of food, or another health condition.
