If you are sick, you need to see a doctor. If you have a toothache, you need to see a dentist. If your car breaks down, you need to take it to a mechanic. But most of the time, you can't just walk in and expect these people to help you. You need to make an appointment. An appointment is a special time set aside for someone to help you. Doctors, dentists, mechanics, and other service people can usually only help one person at a time. You must call ahead and get an appointment.
Generally, you should call for an appointment as soon as you know you need help. If you are sick or have a toothache, your doctor or dentist will try to see you as soon as possible. They set aside time each day to treat people who need help right away. But if you need to have a checkup or have your teeth cleaned, you will probably not get an appointment for weeks or even months. If it is not an emergency, do not expect to be seen right away.
So how do you make an appointment? Here is how Matt does it.
He calls the doctor's office. The receptionist answers, "Good morning. This is Dr. Cole's office. Can I help you?"
