Water polo started in England. It began in the 19th century. The players were rough. Sometimes, the players held each other under water. Sometimes, they passed out. Fans liked this wild sport. One move made a player fly through the air. It was called a flying salmon. The player scored a goal with this move.
English players played water polo in lakes. They played it in rivers. The water was murky. They used a rubber ball. The ball came from India. It was called a pulu. The English players called it "polo." That is how the sport got its name.
