Making Canada

Canada was not always Canada. Once only native people lived there. They hunted animals and fished. They gathered native plants to eat. Later, Canada was owned by England and France. Many people came to Canada from these two countries. They trapped furs. They built homes and towns. They made farms.


Then there was a war. The English won. The French people stayed. Many English people moved in. They loved Canada.


The people in the U.S. liked Canada, too. They wanted it to be part of their country. The people of Canada did not like that.


The people of Canada talked. They could join up. They could make one big land.


They talked to the Maritimes. They talked about what they could do. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick joined Canada. Prince Edward Island was not ready.
