Lumpy Rug Day

"Come on in the living room, everyone!" Lynn's dad called. "We are having a family meeting."

Lynn's mom, Lynn, and her older brother heard Dad call them. The family's Boston terrier, Sam, was already in the living room. He was sleeping on the floor. Sam snored. Dad had a funny smile on his face. What was going on?

Five-year-old Lynn did not know why Dad was asking for a family meeting. She pushed her blond bangs out of her eyes. She grabbed Teddy, her brown stuffed bear. She went into the living room and sat down on the slippery leather couch. Mom and Lynn's brother, Scott, came to the living room. Lynn pushed her toes into the round rug on the floor.

The rug was old. It came from Lynn's grandma. It had a blue background. Here and there on the rug were patterns of red roses. The roses looked tired. They looked dirty. One rose had a grape juice stain on it. Another rose had a mysterious blob of sticky yellow stuff on it. The rug was often bumpy. It did not seem to stay flat. Everyone in the family had tripped on the lumpy rug at one time or another.

Lynn pushed at a round red rose with her toe. The rose became a lump as she pushed. It became a lumpy, bumpy flower!

"Today is a holiday," said Dad.

Lynn's mother looked surprised. It was May 3rd. Scott sat up with excitement. Lynn hugged Teddy. Was it someone's birthday? What holiday happened on May 3rd?

"I will give you a hint," said Dad. "Look at the floor!"
