Until recent times, there were many things in medicine and the natural world which could not be understood. Many men and women stepped forward with theories and explanations that became the groundwork of others. One of these men was Louis Pasteur.
Pasteur was born in Ole, France on December 27, 1822. His father, Jean, worked as a tanner. He had little education or money with which to help his only child. Louis's school career as a child was not impressive. The only subject he seemed to excel in was art. He drew pictures constantly, and some think that he might have been one of France's great artists if he had pursued it. Instead, he chose to learn more about science.
He attended college, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in 1842 and his Masters degree in 1845. He went on to get a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1847. Pasteur was ready to embrace a future that would keep him from poverty the rest of his life.
