Last winter was a terrible winter. There was lots of snow and ice. It seemed like it snowed every day last winter. It was very cold, too. Elena loves snow, but last winter had too much snow. By February, Elena was very tired of it.
In February there was a big snowstorm. The snow started at lunchtime. The snow was so bad that all the kids were sent home from school. Elena and her mom and dad watched the snow come down. It piled higher and higher in their yard. Elena's dad said something about the electricity.
Not long after that, the lights went out in Elena's house. Elena screamed! They were in the dark now. Elena's dad and mom found lots of candles. They lit candles all over their living room. It wasn't so dark, but it wasn't very light, either.
Elena wanted to watch television, but she couldn't. She wanted to use the computer, but she couldn't. Elena's mom got a deck of cards. Sitting near a candle, Elena learned some card games.
"I don't know what I'd do without electricity," Elena told her mom.
"Many years ago, people didn't have electricity," her mom said. "They lived just like we are now - by candlelight."
Wow, Elena thought. No electricity at all!
"It must have been very boring without electricity," Elena said.
"Not at all," her father said.
