What qualifications should a prime minister have? Should he have a college degree? Should he have military experience? How about political or state experience? All are valuable, but, historically, it was very rare for one person to possess all three. It happened with Lester Pearson.
Pearson was born in Newtonbrook in Toronto, Ontario, on April 23, 1897. He began attending the University of Toronto in 1914. A gifted athlete, he excelled at rugby and baseball.
When World War I broke out, he was too young to enlist in the army. Instead, he joined the medical corps and served in Greece and Egypt.
In 1917, he was finally able to enlist and joined the Royal Flying Corps. Even so, Pearson didn't get in much flying time due to two accidents, a bus accident and a plane crash. He was sent home in 1918 to recuperate.
