What are rocks? Rocks are one or more minerals crammed together. Rocks are different colors because of the different minerals that make them.

What is a mineral? A mineral is not alive. It is made by nature. It has the same makeup all the time. Its atoms are arranged in regular patterns. The elements that make up rocks, such as iron, are always present in a mineral in the same amounts. The "recipe" of a mineral never changes. A mineral called halite, or rock salt, is always made of the same two elements: sodium and chlorine. Halite's pattern is a cube.
