Laura Ingalls Wilder
The Little House on the Prairie series of books has been read by children for many years. The books are based on the author's real life. Laura Ingalls Wilder really did have many of the experiences that she wrote about. However, she did not write the books until she was over sixty years old! What do we know about the real Laura?
Laura Ingalls was born on February 7, 1867. She was born in Pepin County, Wisconsin. Laura had an older sister named Mary. Mary became blind when she was fourteen years old. Laura's "Pa" told Laura that she had to "see" for Mary. Laura would explain what things looked like for Mary, using great detail. Perhaps that is why Laura's writing is very descriptive. Laura also had two younger sisters, Carrie and Grace.
