Kite-Making Day

The door slammed shut, and Chloe ran through the living room to her bedroom, slamming that door as well. Mom looked over the top of her laptop screen at her husband. He was sitting in his recliner reading the evening paper. "What do you suppose that was all about?" asked Mom.

"Sounds to me like someone is upset. Should I check it out, or do you want to?" Dad asked as he folded the newspaper and placed it on the pile beside him.

"I think she might like your help this time. If you need me, just give a yell," said Mom.

Dad walked down the hallway and tapped on the door before easing it open and calling inside. "Mind if I come in?" asked Dad.

Chloe sat up on her bed and quickly brushed the tears from her eyes. "Hi, Dad. What's up?" asked Chloe, trying to act as if nothing were wrong.

"I think the better question is what is up with you?" asked Dad as he took a seat at the foot of the bed.

Chloe looked at her dad and then quickly looked away. She knew she would eventually have to tell him, so she just blurted it all out.

"It's that stupid kite. I did just like you said to do. I did some research on the Internet to see how to make one. I followed the instructions, but I wanted the design to be mine. I couldn't find materials like they said to use, but I made do with what I had. I worked on it all week, and now the dumb thing won't fly," said Chloe with a fit of disgust. "It was all just one big waste of time."

"Maybe not," said Dad. "I'm sure you learned a lot. Maybe it is just a matter of refining what you've learned. Can you show me your design?"
