Kangaroo Rats
Some deserts can be hot, and some deserts can be cold. But all deserts are dry places. Finding enough water to survive can be a problem. The kangaroo rat is one desert animal that can survive without drinking water. This animal can get enough water to live from the seeds and grasses it eats.
Kangaroo rats look like tiny kangaroos. Their bodies are little and plump. The average size of a kangaroo rat is between nine and fourteen inches long. The kangaroo rat's tail is always longer than its head and body. The kangaroo rat uses its long, bushy tail for balance. When the kangaroo rat jumps, the tail acts as a steering wheel. The back legs of the kangaroo rat are very big and strong. A kangaroo rat can jump as far as nine feet at one time.
