Many years have passed since children first read about Peter Hatcher's irritating little brother, Fudge. Many young girls have sympathized with Sheila, the Great. Boys and girls have found answers they needed to hear in Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. These books and many others written by Judy Blume are a part of growing up for more than one generation of children.
Judy Blume has had a vivid imagination since she was a young girl. She was born on February 12, 1938, in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Many of her books are based in New Jersey because that is the place she remembers from her childhood. When she thinks back on her childhood, the memories become a part of the stories she writes.
Judy remembers making up stories all of her life. She says she made up stories in her head just because she liked to. She imagined what her life would be like when she grew up. She saw herself as a cowgirl. She saw herself as a famous detective. She saw herself as a ballerina or a great actress. She never saw herself taking care of a home. And she definitely didn't see herself as a writer. She never wrote down the stories she made up in her head. She didn't even tell anyone she had thought about these stories. The only ones who ever heard them were the paper dolls she played with as a little girl.
