John Dewey

John Dewey wanted students to learn things that meant something to them. He changed how education was approached in the 20th century. No, he did not start the Dewey Decimal System used in libraries. He was a teacher, social reformer, and philosopher.


John Dewey was born on October 20, 1859. His father was a merchant in Vermont. Growing up, John delivered newspapers and even worked at a lumberyard. John was a fair student.


At the age of 15, John went to the University of Vermont. He did very well in science. He was introduced to philosophy. John received excellent grades. Then he began teaching. He also read many pieces of philosophy and even wrote his own.
