Jenna Needs a Doctor

Matthias was worried. His little sister, Jenna, was running a fever. She was pulling on her right ear. She had been crying all day. His mother said Jenna probably had an ear infection. Matthias knew his sister needed medical attention. His mother said she was going to the drugstore to get some eardrops, but that had been an hour ago. Where was she?

A few minutes later, his mother walked through the door. Matthias heaved a sigh of relief. She carried nothing but her purse.

"Where were you? What took you so long? Where is Jenna's medicine? Jenna has been crying since you left," blurted Matthias.

"Slow down, son! I'm here now. We need to take Jenna to the doctor. I'm pretty sure she has an ear infection. She needs antibiotics. The druggist told me he thought the over-the-counter medications probably wouldn't be strong enough to help her. He said he thought she needed to see the doctor," she said.

"But that costs money. How will we pay for it?" asked Matthias.

"Don't worry, honey, that's why it took me a little longer," answered his mother.

"What?... How?... Mom, what did you do? Wait a minute...where is your gold necklace? Where is the necklace Grandma gave you? You didn't sell your necklace, did you?" he pleaded.

"Honey, you and your sister's health is more important than an old necklace. Now let's get ready to go for a ride. We have to get your sister to the doctor," she answered.

When Matthias came home from school the following day, Jenna was playing happily with her toys. He was glad to see his sister was feeling better. He sat at the kitchen table and did his homework while his mother prepared supper.
