Japan Surrenders

Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, crippled much of America's Pacific Fleet. Japanese bombers destroyed many targets. The USS Arizona was hit several times and then exploded. There were 1,177 servicemen on board who were killed. Other bombs struck seven other battleships. Some civilians died, too. Altogether, 2,403 people were killed in Hawaii by the sneak attack. The Japanese also bombed other navy ships, army barracks, and airfields. After the strike, one Japanese pilot sent the following message back to his officers: "Surprise attack successful!" The United States responded quickly. It declared war on Japan the very next day. After nearly four long years and many difficult battles .....
